Overview

English

Mastery of English is a major benefit in the modern world. CTBC International Academy (CIA) focuses on the acquisition of reading, writing, and speaking skills through the study of literature. Working in a collaborative and supportive environment, students discuss interesting ethical and philosophical questions raised through literature. Participants build a foundation of English language proficiency through essay writing. Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter university-level literature class discussions.

Humanities

Studying the humanities is crucial to becoming a model citizen in our ever-changing world. Through ethical questions raised and discussed in the study of history, students develop a clear understanding of current issues and the role each may play as they become the leaders of tomorrow. At CTBC, students grow and develop not just through study, discussion, and writing, but also through community service. While participating in community service, individuals better understand the complexities of society and how participation can truly make a difference.

Mathematics

At CTBC International Academy, students use mathematics to solve everyday problems and learn about their world. Students quickly learn that it is not simply the acquisition of mathematics skills that is important, but rather the application of these skills while analyzing and synthesizing information. The study of Mathematics pairs well with humanities study, as students are driven to answer “how can we use mathematics to make a positive impact on our world?”

Science

Science study is a remarkable avenue to exploring the world. At CTBC International Academy, students apply science learning to improve their world. Active participation in the science labs allows students to fully understand the scientific concepts presented in class. Risk-taking and creative problem solving are key components of our science program. The next generation faces key challenges to our world and science study can prepare them to address these issues. Scientific study, paired with English, Humanities, and Mathematics prepares students to leave school with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to improve our world ethically and sustainably.

Languages

Language learning is key to preparing students to make an impact in our increasingly connected world. Learning a foreign language allows students to better connect to other cultures and broadens their horizons. Students with ability in multiple languages will find many more career opportunities than those with just one or two languages. CTBC International Academy offers courses in the following languages: Spanish, French, Japanese, and Korean. Courses taught at CTBC prioritize reading and speaking fluency. Students graduating CTBC leave with fluency in English and Chinese as well as considerable ability in a third language.

Computer Science

Computer science literacy is a crucial skill in today’s world. No matter the students’ future career path, they will be required to have an understanding of technology and computer science. CTBC International Academy takes a novel approach to computer science education, teaching computer science from a problem-solving approach rather than a textbook based approach. This focus allows us to prepare students with real-world STEM experience while at the same time building their critical thinking skills. Students will graduate school with the skills and mindset necessary to make a difference in the world.

Arts

Study of the arts allows for students to develop a strong sense of creativity. Creativity is a key requirement in all of life’s endeavors. At CIA, all students receive exposure to a wide breadth of artistic pursuits: playing an instrument, sketching, painting, and more. Studying in a school where everyone is a scholar, artist, and an athlete allows students to share ideas and learn from one another. Students will graduate with a fine art portfolio, a speciality in an area of the arts, and a strong sense of their creative ability.

Enriched Academic Opportunities

At CTBC International Academy, we recognize that each individual may have certain advanced skills, interests, or knowledge in a particular subject area. In order to provide opportunities to advance these skills and motivate students, university courses are provided for select students. In so doing, we continue to motivate students while meeting their academic interests and strengths. Advanced Placement courses are offered to students which also help to prepare them for the academic rigor expected at the university level.

athletics

CTBC recognizes the need for balance in the lives of students. There are a number of opportunities available to satisfy the athletic interests of all students. It is an expectation for all students to utilize the remarkable facilities and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Exceptional athletes are welcome to vie for a place in our varsity sports programs (golf, baseball, tennis). These programs are varied and matched to the students’ interests. Each is designed to assist students in reaching their full academic and athletic potential. Students playing varsity athletics compete nationally as well as internationally. It is not uncommon for these athletes to gain access to outstanding international colleges and universities upon graduation.

All other students may participate in recreational sports which include the above as well as kayaking, squash, badminton, and yoga.
